It’s December 18th today and we all know what that means: ONE WEEK UNTIL CHRISTMAS!  Depending on where you are in the world, that leaves us with only 5 or 6 days to cram in everything we want or need to do before Christmas weekend hits.  I don’t know about you, but I am not my usual tip-top, “I-am-on-top-of-everything”, Christmas cheerful self this holiday season and although I’ve been feeling pretty letdown about a number of things going on in my life as of late, I am not blind to all the blessings I do have in my life so I’m trying my hardest to make the most of my Christmas holiday.  There is still a lot I am looking forward to, especially with the blog, so here’s the holiday edition of Bits & Bites with new features to come in the new year and Christmas baubles to come later on this week!

  • I finally started The Gingerbread Series yesterday with Moxie’s warm gingerbread cake with caramel sauce, vanilla ice cream, and LOTS of whipped cream!  Some of my foodie plans didn’t pan out this month and I ended up starting the series later than I had anticipated, but there’s still a lot I want to share, so I’m going to keep adding posts to the series well past Christmas and into the new year.  Gingerbread is a warm and cozy flavour fit for winter so I’m making it stick around!  I’m hoping to get my sweet teeth on some rumoured gingerbread cheesecake, some gingerbread and whiskey ice cream, some gelato, and a few others if I can manage it!

  *****

  • Christmas cupcakes!  There is no way I am going to let this Christmas come and go without a nice huge helping of beautifully frosted and decorated Christmas cupcakes and cupcake displays, so I’m going to try my best to get in a few posts this week!  Aside from the festive, tradtional red, green, and white colors, there are a ton of Christmasy flavours being dished out at a number of cupcakeries including peppermint and candy cane, and eggnog among others.

 *****

  • New series!  I started a new Specialty Grocery Store series my with my first post on La Tortilleria by Bloor and Dufferin.  I thought it would be really fun to feature different ethnic grocery shops and specialty food stores and I already have a few other places in mind to visit!  I know of a fabulous Filipino grocery store in the city that I can’t wait to go back to, so we’ll see how many I can explore!

*****

  • New features!  I’m working on some new foodie delights for the blog and I’m hoping to have them ready sometime in January.  I really want to add an Address Book to the main menu bar and in it I plan on organizing all the places I’ve featured on the blog alphabetically with address and contact information.  I’ll have the name of the eatery, its address and phone number, and links to all the posts I’ve done on that particular place.  Can you tell I enjoy organizing information?! 😀

 *****

  • I love getting to know all the different neighbourhoods in and around the city so I’m also planning on creating a simplified Food Map in the main menu bar too!  I’ll have the city broken down by its neighbourhoods and underneath those regions I’ll have lists and links to all the places I’ve blogged about that are located within those areas.  Granted, the map won’t be exhaustive or anywhere near complete considering how much food we have this city and how the blog is only a year old, but this way, if you’re interested in exploring a specific neighbourhood at least you’ll have a few ideas of where you can nosh at!

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season the best they can and I can’t wait to go all out this week (and the week after!) and just enjoy all the great food and company I can squeeze in.

With the Santa Claus Parade behind us, we’re in the thick of the holiday season now and that means there’s a lot of foodie fun to look forward to within the next month!

  • I just finished off a draft of the December Food Calendar today and I’m mega excited about a bunch of events that are happening such as the Slow Food Toronto Terra Madre Day at the Harbourfront Centre and the Winter Festival at Evergreen Brick Works – sneak peek, y’all 😉  I know the start of the new month will mean less days to get my crafting and gift-getting butt in gear, but I’m really looking forward to the holiday bake sales and themed menus (Dessert Lady recently rolled out their holiday spread and you can count me in on that one!), and I’m especially happy that the Toronto Christmas Market is coming back to the Distillery District again this year!  Since I’m definitely planning on making several visits to this market, you can expect more blog posts on goodies in the Distillery District as well!

Introducing Ate by Ate’s first edition of Bits & Bites!  Bits & Bites is a new feature I’m starting on the blog and it’s my way of letting you all know about some of the things I have in the works, kind of like a mini newsletter with updates, ideas, and future plans for the blog.  Truth be told, it’s also my way of keeping organized.  I’m a big fan of sticky notes but my collection of notes is starting to get a little ridiculous.  I’ve stuck so many on my mirror that I can barely see myself now!  Although I really enjoy the element of anticipation when I post things without necessarily announcing it first, I thought this would be a nice way of flushing out and sharing my thoughts and ideas with everyone, so let’s hop to it!

  • Ate by Ate now has a Facebook page!  Some of you may already know this if you’ve already visited, but for those who don’t, I’ve started a Facebook page that’s primarily photo gallery centric in nature.  I’ve created a gallery of all my scrapbook layouts (I’ve been uploading layout photos every day for the past week now), and I just created a cupcake gallery yesterday, showcasing my favourite cupcake photos and cupcake photography!  As time goes on, I’ll be adding more albums and doing more with the page, but for the time being, I’m sticking to post updates and photo galleries.  I have an adorable FB icon and “Like” box on my sidebar, so check it out!

  • New series!  I looove having different types of series on the blog and I’m gearing up to start a few new ones in the near future including a Vegan Diner and Comfort Food series and some holiday themed ones.  Currently, I have the Vegetarian Sandwich series, the Farmers’ Market series, the Vegan Chili series, and most recently, the Fall Harvest series going on.

  • Winter holidays!  We’re in the thick of November now and you know what that means: less than two months until the holidays!  I love Christmas and I look forward to this time of year every year.  I’ve had so much fun doing the Fall Harvest series that I’m hoping to start a winter one and a few holiday-themed ones.  I have plans on doing a gingerbread series and a hot chocolate series, but if anyone has other ideas, let me know and I’ll see what I can explore and get around to!

  • Food Calendar!  If you’ve checked out November’s Food Calendar, you’ve might have noticed have long, extensive, and large it’s gotten!  I was recently asked to be a part of the Food Bloggers of Canada staff and my main job is compiling a list of foodie events for Toronto and the surrounding area, so after doing some research for the FBC, I was amazed at how much new stuff I found out!  I’m working on a way to split the Food Calendar into two parts, one that’s devoted to farmers’ markets and food and drink events, and the second focusing only on the cooking classes, demos, and seminars.

Phew!  I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do everything I want to do, but it’s fun making plans and hashing out ideas.  I hope you all enjoy this new Bits & Bites feature and I will see you all tomorrow!
