Do you know what one of my ultimate dreams in life is?  In a dreamland, I want to be a fabulous baker and cook, I want to have a gorgeous little collection of cute kitchen accessories, and I want to be the hostess with the mostess hosting regular afternoon teas, baking parties, and dinner parties with close friends and family.  I want utensils and tools of every shape and colour, I want to outfit my future kitchen in cupcake accessories, I want pretty patterned dishes and linens, and I want pots and pans and skillets that I can grab on a whim to whip up yummy dishes.  I want it all.

As a foodie since the age of 8 ripping out entire Recipes Only sections from Homemakers magazines and smacking together food collages out of magazine and supermarket clipouts, I have wanted to create my own culinary masterpieces just like the ones I’ve admired on those glossy pages for so many years.  While I can’t quite invest the money to do everything I want to do right now, that doesn’t stop me from dreaming of all the amazing things I can do with the beautiful things I find at kitchen and gift shops!  These shops make you consider all the possibilities and they are outlets for culinary fun and creativity.  Clay was the first kitchen boutique I profiled in the new Kitchen Boutique series I started last week and this week, we’re taking a “sweet” look at redLetter in Yorkville!

redLetter is one of my favourite shops in the entire city.  Every time I’m in Yorkville, I’m compelled to go in.  It’s a kitchen boutique and gift shop all in one and they carry some of the most beautiful, dainty things.  This shop is fit for the cupcake, kitchen, party entertainer, and tea party fanatic!  Think heavy-duty cupcake and cake stands, tea pots, tea cups, and tea saucer sets, mugs, cake and cupcake accessories,  gorgeous patterned china and dishes in florals, pastels, brights, and filigree, servingware, baking accessories, napkins and linens, table settings, aprons, and books on afternoon teas, pastries, cheese, and other food-related goodies!

Even though many of their kitchen and dining items would be perfect additions to everyone’s individual kitchen and homes, many items are fit for both birthday and wedding gifts.  Like it’s name (a red letter day meaning a special day of importance), the goal of redLetter is to make dining celebrations sparkly, beautiful, memorable, and fun!

Aside from kitchen and food-related wares, redLetter carries a wonderful selection of stationery, candles, soap and cosmetics, home decor, and organizational items.  If I could take home the entire shop, I would.  Foodies beware, you are going to find a lot of things you’ll want to take home with you.  One of the nice things is that everything is clearly labelled with a price tag.  You have no idea how frustrated I feel when nothing is labelled and I’m constantly being forced to ask someone for a price because it makes me feel like such a bother!

Funny enough though, the items I have purchased from here have never been for myself!  They’ve all been gifts for others and my favourite gift item has to be this adorable magnetic fridge pad in the shape of a slice of white bread with a small yellow square sticky note stack to represent the “butter” on the bread!  It’s adorable novelty items like these that make this shop so appropriate for anyone and everyone who loves food and cute things.

There are many things I adore here, but my favourites have to be the tea sets, the baking accessories, and of course, the cupcake items!  I have an obsession with beautiful tea pots, tea cups, and tea sets.  At the age of 5, I had a plastic red and white tea set to go along with my toy kitchen and at the age of 9, my aunt bought me a pink floral patterned miniature china tea set that I played with almost every day for at least a year.

I have been tempted so many times to pick up sets from Winners and antique shops, and there was even a time I was thisclose to snatching up a tea set from a rummage sale taking place at school.  That’s how bad it is.  redLetter has tea sets in coordinating hat boxes in every colour and pattern imaginable.  Polka dots, florals, swirls, solids, stripes, hearts, and even a rainbow set on one occasion where the set came with 6 tea cups, one in every colour of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.  I could have died; it was so pretty.

Other than the tea sets and cupcake-related goods, my heart belongs to the kitchen and baking tools.  I have been lusting after a set of heart-shaped measuring cups and spoons for eons and one of these days I am just going to have to bite the bullet and buy them because they’re so unique and hard to find.  I’ve been wanting heart-shaped measuring cups and spoons for so long and when I found them here a few years ago (yes, it’s been years.  I’m awful), I was overjoyed.  I’m terrible at buying things for myself though.  There are so many things I like and want and if I bought everything on my mental wishlist, I’d be in trouble.  Often times, I end up not buying anything at all which explains why I’m still whimpering over items I discovered when I was still in school.  Sigh.  redLetter will do that to you.  It’ll capture you with it’s hush, magical shop of treasures and it’ll draw you in and make you come back for more.  It’s just that type of shop.

redLetter is located at 128 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, between the major streets of Bay St. and Avenue Road.  redLetter sits just west of Bellair Street and is open 7 days week, Monday-Friday from 11am-7pm, Saturday from 10am-7pm, and Sunday from 12pm-6pm.
